Certainly one of my preferred recollections when becoming an adult within the 50’s and 60’s was having the ability to hear the car racing action [stock cars and open cockpit midget] at Freeport Speedway in Freeport New You are able to, from two [2] cities away. They ran races throughout the summer time on Tuesday night, Friday night, and Saturday night. Visiting the races like a spectator seemed to be a hurry for me personally.

I loved everything about this, the odor of racing fuel, burning rubber, saw dust and hotdogs in the food concessions. Throughout the late 50’s and early 60’s the racing came large crowds of fans. I can tell within my minds eye even today, all of the activity, the vendors selling race collectibles, the seem and odor of the snack bar [pop corn, hotdogs and so on. I’m able to still hear the beer vendor as his increased and lower the stands yelling the familiar phrase of “Get Ya Cold Beer Here” Obviously I had been too youthful to get certainly one of his clients. Other vendors offered copies of Speedway News, programs, hotdogs, replica racing flags and much more products.

A few of the great racers that ran a Freeport Stadium are L’ensemble des Ley, Jim Lacy [Certainly one of my faves], Bruno Brackey also known as the Flying Postman because of his regular job, George and Erectile dysfunction Brunnhoelzl, George Brunnhoelzl Junior. [George Junior. built the famous Brunnhoelzl jack used by lots of Dale earnhardt jr . Winston Cup teams today.], Axel Anderson, Richie Evans, Jerry Prepare, Charlie Jarzombek, Gary Winters, Fred Harbach, George Wagner, Bill Spade, Tom Baldwin, Red Raynor, Reinhardt and much more.

Freeport Stadium choose to go through a number of different promoters through the years. Their list incorporated what they are called Kedenburg, Ray Mendelsohn, Duke Donaldson, and Don Campi. Duke Donaldson was well termed as the voice of Freeport Speedway. Because the track announcer, Donaldson for several years opened up a race event with announcing, “As well as Gentlemen. Thanks for visiting Freeport Stadium, the earliest continuously-run race track within the USA” and thanking everybody for going to “Freeport Speedway in tropical Freeport.” His style did much to produce a sense of great action and professionalism for just about any given race event.

The 2nd 1 / 2 of the 60’s started a loss of the recognition of stock vehicle racing in Freeport. There have been still many promotions being carried out but compensated attendance rejected.

Racing at Freeport required your final curtain in 1983 after half a century of continuous operation.
